TEARING 022 began with the artist’s experience of pain while having a tattoo removed, and considers how bodily pain can be transmitted between viewers. When the sight of a wound makes someone who has not shared the experience feel an imagined tearing of the skin, the work asks how invisible psychological pain might be understood when visible bleeding is so much easier to recognise.
The work was developed during a period overshadowed by world events and online news in 2022. Repeated physical pain became entangled with distant suffering encountered through screens, while other people’s questions about the wound caused numbed sensations to return. Cloth, fishhooks, pins, and ink form an image of a body pulled, suspended, and repeatedly torn.
