Project note

The Overwritten Floating Island places the artist’s memories beside those of the artist’s parents and the development of Shenzhen. Through first-person writing, interviews, and archival material, the work follows how a migrant family forms its identity within a city under constant reconstruction, asking whether narrative can become a new site of memory when physical places no longer hold the past.

The project began with an accidental visual overlap between London and Shenzhen before turning towards internal migration in the Chinese context. The artist’s parents arrived in Shenzhen from different provinces; the artist grew up in the young city as a member of the second generation, yet could not fully identify with Cantonese culture, the parents’ hometowns, or a stable idea of being ‘from Shenzhen’. Moving between personal narrative, family interviews, and an urban timeline, the book considers how memory is inherited, displaced, and rewritten through retelling.

Structure & method

The book moves between personal narrative, conversations with the artist’s parents, archival material, and an urban timeline. Rather than treating memory as fixed evidence, it attends to how stories are inherited, displaced, and rewritten each time they are told.

Together with 000X, the project considers domestic archives and urban change as unstable systems through which a person attempts to locate the self.
