Lingering is both a reflection on the artist’s time in Glasgow and a brief farewell. The work places fragments of Shenzhen and Glasgow beside one another, looking for difficult-to-name similarities across buildings, waterways, weather, and everyday routes, while considering how movement between cities and nations gradually changes the person who travels through them.
Water functions as both symbol and connective structure in the work. The sea links the Eastern and Western Hemispheres; freshwater enters the body; rivers and bridges form part of the city’s transport network. Against these continuing flows, old houses, street corners, and reference points from memory repeatedly disappear. Lingering therefore treats departure as a recurring condition: a person flows from one city to another while leaving, losing, and rewriting relationships with place.
