Ziyi Qiu is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow, UK, and Shenzhen, China. Through installation, moving image, and sound, their work explores the state of existence in the real world and the latent connections between humans and their environments.

“My parents were among the first wave of migrant workers who came to Shenzhen after China’s Reform and Opening-up. I was born in Shenzhen, Guangdong, in the early 2000s, and spent my childhood and teenage years in this city. After reaching adulthood, I frequently left Shenzhen to study, live, and travel in other cities and countries. These cross-regional experiences gradually led me to question my own identity: I do not seem to be a singular entity, but rather a composite shaped by cultural intersections, political influences, and local traditions. In the process of growing up across cities, nations, and cultures, I have never been able to attain a stable sense of self.

I came to realize that while people transform their environments, they are also constantly shaped by them. In exploring this reciprocal relationship, I continue to search for traces of my own existence. - Ziyi Qiu”
